Dear Friends and Family:

CANCER!! What a horrible word - especially devastating when associated with a loved one. Recently a wonderful person I know was diagnosed with cancer and after many months of pain and suffering he lost his battle. Many of you know Mark and also know that although he has left us in body - his spirit will remain with us forever. Shortly after this tragedy I heard about the Team In Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I knew instantly that I would join and help this cause however I could.

I will be running in the Portland Marathon in Portland Oregon on September 30, 2001. Yea that's right a 26.2 mile marathon. Many of you that know me well are scratching your head wondering how this is possible. It's true :)Preparation for this marathon includes many hours training, eventually running 40-60 miles a week. The challenge of training will be nothing compared to the pain that the patients experience during the cancer treatments of chemotherapy, spinal taps and bone marrow biopsies. A marathon is a celebration of human spirit, physical ability and mental endurance, but for me it is the celebration of life and health.

My committment involves fundraising, running on my own almost every day, meetings, deadlines, and getting up at 5:45 every Saturday for long "team" runs. Most of these committments I can handle myself, but the fundraising portion involves you. Please help me raise the ,300 needed to fund research and conquer Leukemia! Your gifts are tax deductible, and whatever you give will be much appreciated. I am asking you to contribute any amount of money you can - not to mention your encouragement and prayers - to help me reach this goal. Gifts are needed in all ranges ~ #25, , , in between and more.

For those who are curious as to where the money goes, here is my best explanation. Of the ,300 I am required to raise, no more than 20% goes to the expenses associated with my trip to Oregon, but I plan on contributing most of that. The remainder of the money will be used right here in Iowa for research, education and patient aid only. Check out the Fact Sheet Enclosed !!

Contributing is easy - simply complete the enclosed Donor Form and return your donation to me in the enclosed envelope by July 15. Every donation entered into drawing for prizes. Also I will host a fundraising party in August - full of fun, food and prizes!! Not to mention - the tunes of the Back Again Band!!

Thanks for your support in meeting this challenge.

With love and sincere appreciation....

Courtney Calhoun

P.S. If you have a loved one currently coping with any type of cancer or one that has passed away, I would be glad to add them as an 'honoree'. I will finish this race in honor of them!!
